Botanical Art Courses

Botanical Illustration Welcome to our 2017 programme. We are delighted to bring you an extended number of workshops offering a wealth of experienced and professional tutors in attractive and tranquil locations around the country. All the workshops are suitable for beginners through to those with experience and all are open to residential as well as non-residential participants (non-participating partners or friends are welcome too!). Two fees are shown against each workshop, the greater being the residential fee (fully inclusive) and the lesser, the non-residential fee (excludes dinner & b&b). A deposit of £80 will secure your place. Early booking for all workshops is recommended.

An Introduction to Watercolour Pencils in Botanical Art

An enjoyable and informative day learning how to use watercolour pencils to achieve colourful and realistic flowers and foliage.
 
10 am - 3.45 pm with refreshments provided.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Starting the Season - Botanical Drawing & Painting

Start your creative season off joining like-minded company and enjoy a botanical drawing and painting workshop, either starting a fresh piece of work or continuing with a piece of work you would like to finish.  Subject matter provided.  Orgnaiser:  Sue Field
A residential workshop also open to day attendees.  Starting at 2.30 pm on 5 February and finishing by 3.00 pm on 7 February.
Suitable for all abilities.
Full board and the workshop for residents.  Lunches, refreshments and evening meals with the workshop for day attendees.

Explore New Ground - Botanical in Coloured Pencil/Graphite/Pen & Ink

Enjoy using coloured pencils to explore working on a variety of different paper surfaces including black or coloured paper, drafting film, Bristol board, watercolour paper etc. Learn the different techniques to complete a small botanical study on each.  Tutor:  Sue Vize
 
A residential workshop also open to day attendees.  All abilities welcome.  Suitable for those who enjoy drawing in detail.

Spring time at Barlow!

Enjoy a day of drawing and painting the deligfhts of spring time in Barlow, daffodils, tulips, emerging buds and blossom or choose to capture the surrounding spring landscape from the doors of the Art Room.  Subject matter and refreshments included.   Organiser:  Sue Field

Spring Sensation - Tantalizing Tulips & Spring Flowers in Coloured Pencil

Learn to select and layer colours to produce luscious, rich and accurate colour mixes and to choose effective shade colours to give work depth whilst keeping colours vibrant.  Demonstrations on specific techniques for roots, stamens, bloom and perspective to create a fabulous plant portrait.  Tutor:  Ann Swan

The Joys of Spring - botanical watercolour on Vellum or Paper

Welcome in the Spring with whites, yellows, purples and pinks.  Covering a variety of seasonal subjects, this botanical illustration workshop will looks at capturing spring flowers, blossom and spring plants, concentrating on composition, colour and freshness to achieve pleasing studies or completing a composition.  
Suitable for all abilities and those who enjoy painting in detail.
The workshop starts at 2.30 pm on 16 April and finishes at 3.30 pm on 18 April.

Botanical Drawing and Painting with Watercolour Pencils

Water colour pencils have great flexibility and are a fabulous medium to capture botanical subjects.  An informative and enjoyable botanical illustration workshop using watercolour pencils to capture botanical subjects at this time or a subject of your choosing.  Suitable for all abilities and beginners welcome.  One to one tuition from an expert botanical artist and painter.
 
The workshop starts at 2.30 pm on 8 May and will finish by 3.30 pm. on 10 May.
Residential and day participants welcome.

Here we go gathering nuts in May - Botanical illustration in coloured pencil

Although it is unlikely we will find any nuts – this is thought to be a corruption of ‘knots’ referring to the Hawthorne blossoms in May.  There should be lots of interesting and colourful flowers emerging.  Capture your favourite blooms in coloured pencil – pick from Tulips, Primulas, velvety auriculas, Forget-Me-Nots, Wallflowers, Azaleas, Paeonies, Columbines and fruit blossoms amongst others.
This two day workshop starts at 9.45 am on 14 & 15 May and finishes by 4.30 pm each day.  Refreshments and lunches included.

In Full Bloom! - Botanical Illustration in Coloured Pencil

June marks the start of the Rose season but there are lots of other colourful summer favourites to inspire too – Irises, Poppies, Lilies and Strawberries as well as fresh vegetables such as Asparagus. Learn to build up their vibrant colours using coloured pencils.  An inspirational workshop with one of the UK's leading colour pencil artists and tutor.  Suitable for all abilities.

Wild Flower Meadows in Ink & Coloured Pencil

Enjoy recreating the natural profusion of wildflower meadows using mark making in ink, vibrant coloured pencil and embossing and lifting techniques. Some experience of coloured pencil work and composition is useful but not essential and will suit all abilities. Inspirational images and examples of meadow flora will be provided.  A rewarding and enjoyable two day workshop.
10 am - 4.30 pm each day.  Lunches and refreshments included.
 
 
What to bring
Any coloured pencils, but preferably artists’ quality for ease of application and lightfastness.
